My “No Shampoo” Experience

I am sure most of you have heard about the “no poo” hair routine—or maybe this is your first time and you are intrigued/slightly grossed out. I have done multiple trials, seeing how my hair would adapt to just washing with water. Before I go any further, I do want to emphasize that the results are different for everyone, and my experience is not going to be like others. That being said, let’s dig into my experiment. I will say that for me, no shampoo was tough. I have very thick hair with an oily scalp, and my hair seemed to soak up everything that it came into contact with. I stuck out the first week, with the first few days being okay. By day 7, it looked like I had oiled my hair—which was disgusting, but I pushed on. It got a little better after a month, but I had to use apple cider vinegar to help with the greasiness of my hair. I could never get my hair to have that silky, clean feeling again, and man did I miss it. After about two months, I couldn’t bear it any longer as no further results were surfacing. There are so many factors that go into an oily scalp—unbalanced hormones, pH level of scalp is off, diet, etc.—so for me to say a no poo routine will never work for my hair would be unreasonable, but in most cases it is hard to figure out what the root problem is. My goal of no poo was to get away from shampoo and conditioners with high chemicals, which I was eventually able to do this after trying many different shampoo and conditioner bars. I am glad I was able to try no poo, and I think I will try it again in the future just to see if I anything changes. Overall, it was fun to experiment!
